The Vintage Bronze Openwork Scroll Crucifix is pierced from end to end. Scrolls curl out of each arm and are cut clean through the metal, so the cross is as much open air as bronze, and every terminal reads as a fleur-de-lis blossoming from its stem. A trefoil finial rises above the corpus and a second drops below the feet, closing the shape at both ends.
Openwork crosses of this kind were cast in quantity across the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and travelled a very long way with the people who carried them, traded and gifted and handed down. The flowering terminals hold the old idea of the cross as a living tree, the instrument of death bearing fruit. Worn today the pierced ground makes the crucifix noticeably lighter than its size suggests, and it takes light from behind as readily as from the front.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
