The Vintage Bronze Openwork Sacred Heart Medal is cut right through, so the rays behind the figure are open air rather than metal. At the center is the bust of Christ, bearded and haloed, both hands drawn up to his breast to show the Sacred Heart with its small cross above, and long straight rays run out from behind him to the scrolled border.
The devotion took its familiar shape after the visions given to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque at Paray-le-Monial in the 1670s, and it is nearly always shown just this way: the heart uncovered, offered rather than hidden, held out by his own hands. The piercing suits the subject, since light passes through the metal as the rays pass through the image. Antiquing throws the pale figure forward against the dark of the openwork.
