The Vintage Bronze Openwork Medal, Veiled Figure at Prayer is cut open across its upper half, so the figure stands against nothing but light. She is shown in profile, veiled, her long hair falling loose behind and her hands joined at the breast, rising out of a thick bank of roses and small blossoms that fills the lower oval and climbs the right-hand side.
It is an image of prayer itself rather than of any one episode, the moment of asking held still. The roses massed beneath her are the flower the Church has always given to Our Lady, the garland the rosary takes its name from, and they turn the whole medal into a kind of offering laid at her feet. The relief is soft and deep, the flowers keep their detail in the hand-finished surface, and the pierced ground gives the piece an airiness unusual at this size.
