The Vintage Bronze Old Trade Crucifix is plain in the best sense: a long shaft, a short bar, a fan-lobed trefoil above the head and a matching lobed plate at the foot, both scored with radiating lines cut straight into the metal. The corpus is elongated and boldly modelled, without any of the fine detail of a workshop casting, and two small punched marks sit below the titulus.
Across the top runs a wide band cut with four crude angular letters, INRI, for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. Crosses of this pattern were cast in quantity for the North American fur trade and carried far inland along the Canadian rivers, passing between missionaries, traders and the communities they met. Few devotional objects have traveled harder or further, and the roughness of the casting is part of that history rather than a flaw in it.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
