The Vintage Bronze Large Openwork Crucifix with INRI runs a generous two and a quarter inches and is cut through almost everywhere. Each arm finishes in an open loop, a scrolled oval of openwork frames the crossing behind the corpus, and a long pierced panel runs down the shaft below the feet, so that light passes through the whole piece.
Set on the upright above the head is a small raised plaque lettered INRI, the abbreviation of Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. This is the titulus, the board Pilate ordered nailed above the cross to state the charge, written in three languages so that everyone passing could read it. What was meant as mockery the Church has kept as a title, and it is cast here cleanly and clearly. At this generous scale the pierced work keeps the piece surprisingly light.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
