The Jerusalem cross pendant keeps the oldest of Christian emblems very plainly: one large cross with broad arms flaring at the ends, and four small crosslets set in the quadrants between them. There is no figure and no lettering anywhere. The surface is left hammered and pitted rather than polished, so the metal catches light unevenly the way forged work does.
The five crosses have been read since the Crusades as the five wounds of Christ, and equally as the Gospel going out from Jerusalem to the four corners of the earth. Pilgrims have brought the form home from the Holy Land for eight centuries, which is why it still reads at once as a traveler's cross, quiet and substantial and meant for daily wear.
