Each arm of the Vintage Bronze Italian Budded Trinity Crucifix swells into a cluster of three rounded buds set above a fanned palmette. The crossbar is filled with chevron hatching, the foot finishes in a broad fan, and the corpus hangs with bent knees and the head fallen forward.
The form is long known as the budded or trinity cross, because the three lobes at every terminal were read as the three Persons of the Trinity, the doctrine repeated at each point of the cross. Above the head a raised scroll is lettered INRI, short for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, the inscription Pilate set on the cross and the one detail all four Gospels record. The softened edges of the buds carry over from the Italian original.
The Italian budded crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the crucifix's vintage character.
