The proportions of the Vintage Bronze Irish Penal Crucifix are its whole story. The shaft is long and the arms are cut very short, so the cross closes into the palm and disappears there. A slender corpus hangs on it with the arms raised steeply and the head fallen to the shoulder, a small raised emblem at the end of either arm, the field around them worn smooth in the way a hand-held object becomes smooth.
The antique original is an Irish penal cross of the Penal Times, 1540 to 1731, when the practice of the faith was suppressed, priests were hunted, and Mass was said in the open at rocks in the fields. Crosses were made in this narrow form so they could be held through a prayer and then closed out of sight. The shape is not a stylistic choice but the memory of a difficult two centuries, carried quietly.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
