The Hearts and Scrolls Philippine Crucifix is cross-hatched all over, so the arms carry a woven texture, and its outline is broken by pierced scrolls and small hearts that curl outward at every corner. A leafy crest rises above the head of the corpus and a scrolled palmette closes the foot, while the figure of Christ is modelled with the head fallen forward and the knees drawn slightly to one side.
The original comes out of the Philippines, where Spanish devotional forms took root and were reworked in a warmer and far more exuberant hand. The hearts scattered through the scrollwork are that hand at work, ornament that is also devotion, the love of the Passion set into the frame of the cross itself. Filipino Catholicism has always been generous in this way, and the piece is much the better for it.
The Philippine crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the crucifix's vintage character.
