The Gothic Madonna Rosary Center is tall and narrow, with a stylized Virgin standing against an arched panel, her hands joined at the breast. Her veil falls in two long straight lines almost to the foot of the piece, and the whole figure is drawn in a handful of flowing contours rather than modelled in detail. The reverse is a plain textured field with a single haloed figure in low relief at its center.
The Gothic revival sent nineteenth century makers back to the long, columnar Madonnas of the cathedral porches, where a figure is drawn to be read from a distance and from below rather than examined closely. That discipline serves a rosary center unusually well: at three-quarters of an inch there is no room for detail, and this one gets its entire effect from an outline.
