The Vintage Bronze Four-Rosette Radiant Crucifix closes each of its four arms with a circular medallion, and inside every one of them opens a flat rose within a lobed rim. Behind the corpus a broad fan of rays spreads out from the crossing, so that Christ stands against light on every side.
The roses answer the severity of the subject. Flowers on a cross are an old Christian thought, the dead wood that came into bloom, the Passion already opening toward Easter, and here they are set at the four points where the eye naturally comes to rest. The radiating ground keeps the whole crucifix alive as it turns, and the warm tone of the bronze softens those rays into something nearer candlelight than sunburst.
