The Vintage Bronze Four Evangelists Crucifix sets four sunken panels around the crossing, and in each one a winged figure bends over a book at his desk: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John at their writing, shown with the wings that belong to their traditional symbols. The corpus is modelled across them in high relief, the arms drawn wide, so that Christ crucified stands at the center of the four Gospels.
The design gathers a whole page of medieval iconography onto a cross under two inches. The evangelists surround the crucifixion because their books lead to it; the Gospel they wrote and the death they recorded are held together in one image, and the reader is left standing where they stood.
