The Vintage Bronze Formal Crucifix with Shell Rays is compact and formally arranged. The corpus is set against a large fluted shell that fills the crossing behind him and throws the figure forward, beaded bands cross the shaft above and below, and both side arms finish in small crown-like crestings.
The shell has stood for baptism since the earliest Christian centuries, the vessel that pours the water and the badge worn by pilgrims on the road to Compostela, and behind a corpus it doubles as a fan of rays. A crown rises above the head and a lobed foot closes the shaft, so the design is bracketed at both ends rather than simply stopping, and Christ is crowned above and glorified behind. At an inch and three-eighths it reads clearly from across a room.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
