The Vintage Bronze Flowering Crucifix with Etched Leaves closes every arm in a pointed, veined leaf, and at the crossing a full open flower spreads behind the corpus, so the cross reads as a living branch in bloom. Christ is modelled in high relief with the head fallen to the right, and the etched veining is carried right out to the leaf tips.
The flowering cross is one of the oldest and most hopeful images in Christian art: the dead wood of the crucifixion breaking into leaf, the tree of the fall made the tree of life. It appears again and again on nineteenth-century European rosary crucifixes, where a devout hand wanted the Passion and the resurrection held in a single object rather than kept apart. The antiquing brings it out, letting the engraved veins hold shadow while the corpus stands bright above them.
