The Flowering Crucifix is in bloom from end to end. Small cast flowers and leaves run out along the arms, climb the upright and gather at the foot, so that the corpus hangs in the middle of a flowering field, and a small plaque above the head carries the letters INRI.
Those four letters stand for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, the charge Pilate ordered nailed above the cross in mockery and which the Church has read ever since as simple truth. The flowers answer it. A cross that blossoms is one of the oldest and most hopeful images in Christian art, the dead wood breaking into life on the third day, and nineteenth-century European rosary makers returned to it again and again. Held in the hand, the piece says the whole of Good Friday and Easter at once.
