Vintage Bronze Flower Bud Openwork Crucifix

Curling tendrils fill the cut-through arms of this bronze crucifix, each one rising to a closed bud, and the foot flares into a large fleur-de-lis. Not one of the flowers has opened: the whole cross is caught at the moment just before bloom. The corpus hangs at the crossing with the head inclined to the right, modeled simply so the openwork carries the eye to him.
A cross shown as a plant about to flower is an old and deliberate idea. The hymns of Holy Week call it the tree that bore the world's salvation, and buds hold the moment of promise rather than fulfillment, which is where anyone wearing it is standing too.
