Vintage Bronze First Sorrow Rosary Center, Presentation

One face of this rosary center is the Presentation in the Temple. Under an arcade lit by a seven-branched lampstand, Simeon holds the Child before an altar with an open book on it, Mary kneels at the center, and a figure at the right brings the offering in a basket. The other face shows the Virgin veiled and haloed, swords driven into her heart, with MATER DOLOR around the rim for Mater Dolorosa, Mother of Sorrows.
The two faces belong together. It was in the Temple that Simeon, taking the Child in his arms, told Mary that a sword would pierce her own soul too, and that word is counted the first of her seven sorrows. A rosary center of this kind was made for the Servite chaplet of the Seven Sorrows, prayed slowly through the losses of her life, and it puts the joy of the Presentation and the cost of it on a single piece.
