The Vintage Bronze Eucharistic Cross is built entirely around the Mass. A chalice stands at the crossing with the host raised above it in a burst of rays, ringed by a crown of thorns; ears of wheat rise along the arms and bunches of grapes hang from the top, the bread and the wine shown as they grow. The openwork between the arms lets light straight through the piece.
At the foot of the upright are the letters IHS, the ancient monogram of the Holy Name of Jesus. Wheat and vine on a cross are never mere ornament; they are the grain that falls into the earth and dies, the grapes that are pressed, and what both become on the altar. The thorns around the host keep the price of it in view. It suits a First Communion, a Confirmation, or anyone with a particular love of the Blessed Sacrament.
