The Vintage Bronze Eucharistic Chalice and Host Medal gives its long six-sided panel over entirely to the altar. A stemmed chalice stands at the center with the Host rising above its cup, marked with a cross; wheat climbs on either side in stiff upright sprays, and heavy clusters of grapes sit at the foot of the stem. Small cast knops finish the corners of the panel.
Wheat and vine, bread and wine: it is the oldest shorthand there is for the Mass, and the medal spends no lettering explaining it. The Host set above the cup is the moment of elevation held still. A piece like this was made for First Communion and for anyone whose devotional life turns on the Blessed Sacrament, and the antiqued finish pools in the modelling so the wheat and the rim of the cup stay clear at a small scale.
