The arms of the cross open into deep leafy scrolls, each chased with a fine beaded line, and a pierced crest of foliage rises above the crossbar, so the figure of Christ rests inside a frame of quiet movement rather than against a plain field.
The scrollwork does what the old European workshops always meant it to do. It turns the instrument of the Passion into something flowering, the cross read as the tree of life rather than the gallows, so that the eye is drawn toward the corpus by way of the leaves.
