The Vintage Bronze Edwardian Scrollwork Rosary Center is shaped like a small cartouche. Deep scroll and acanthus work frames it on every side, a fluted shell rises at the top, and a scrolled foot finishes it below, so the ornament does all the work a figure would do. The middle is a plain raised panel, left smooth and bright against the dark carved frame.
Centers were often made this way so that an engraver could add initials, a name, or a date afterward, which makes this a natural choice for a rosary put together for a First Communion, a Confirmation, or an anniversary. Left plain it is handsome on its own, in the fluent decorative taste of the Edwardian years, when devotional silverwork was at its most assured and a well-cut scroll was thought reason enough.
