The Vintage Bronze Edwardian Acanthus Scroll Crucifix is given over almost entirely to carving. The arms flare into broad rounded lobes, and every surface, from the foot up the shaft and out along both arms, rolls with acanthus scrollwork cut deep enough to hold shadow. Against all that movement the corpus at the crossing is slender and still, which is exactly the effect the design wants.
There is no titulus and no rays here; the ornament carries the piece by itself, in the confident decorative manner of the years just before the first war, when the silversmiths' trade was at its most fluent. The stillness at the center is the point. Everything around Christ turns and flourishes, and he does not, and a crucifix built that way says something a plainer one cannot. Two inches long, it carries all that ornament without ever looking crowded, and the deep relief keeps its antiqued finish handsomely as it wears.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
