This Eastern cross carries the crucified Christ on a form whose arms are pierced by four openings within a ring, so the whole reads as a wheel around the figure. The abbreviation ІС ХС for Jesus Christ stands beside his arms, with a small titulus above his head. The other face is filled edge to edge with lines of Church Slavonic, foliate ornament above and a panel of knotwork below.
Crosses of this kind belong to the Slavic Christian East, where a cross is given at baptism and worn from that day on, next to the skin and under the clothes rather than over them.
