The corpus is modelled in fine relief with the head fallen to one shoulder, against a plain field that leaves the ornament to the angels, and a titulus plaque sits above the head in the usual place.
It is a warm, almost Baroque way of picturing the Crucifixion, one in which sorrow and glory are held together in a single small object. The cherubim are the angels Scripture sets closest to the throne of God, and placing them at the ends of the cross says what the figure alone does not: that heaven attends the death of Christ.
