The Vintage Bronze Crucifix with Leaves and Flowering Stem treats the cross as a living tree. Leafy sprays run outward along both arms and up the shaft above the corpus, and a slender flowering stem climbs from the foot toward the feet of Christ, so the whole crucifix reads as something in growth rather than something dead. Christ hangs at the crossing with his head fallen to one side.
The cross as the tree of life is among the oldest ideas in Christian art: the wood that killed becomes the wood that gives life, and the tree of Eden is answered by the tree of Calvary. Above the head a small furled scroll is lettered INRI, for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. At two inches, the piece carries that whole idea lightly and wears it well.
