A small open crown sits at the head of the Vintage Bronze Crowned Shield Center, with swags of drapery falling away on either side as though the image beneath were being unveiled. In the circular field at the middle is a bust of Christ in profile, long-haired and bearded, the arms of a cross showing behind his shoulders and fine rays spreading from his head. A beaded border finishes the lower edge.
The profile portrait of Christ has a long history in Christian metalwork, descending from the medieval belief in a true likeness handed down from the first century. The effect here is intimate: the face is turned slightly away, in thought rather than address, while the crown above makes the second point of the design plainly, that the man in the circle is a king. No lettering is cast on the piece.
