This oval medal frames the Virgin and Child the way a shrine frames a statue. Mother and Son are both crowned, and behind them stands a whole small architecture: brick courses, a planked door, curtains looped back at either side, and a lamp burning above each curtain. The effect is a chapel niche carried in the hand.
Nothing on the piece is lettered, so it speaks entirely through its imagery, and that imagery belongs to the venerated shrine images of Europe — the kind of statue that is crowned by decree, dressed by the parish and kept lit day and night. The crown belongs to Mary as queen and to her Son as king; the burning lamps belong to the people who keep watch in front of them, one generation handing the vigil to the next.
