A second, shorter crossbar sits low on the shaft beneath the main arms, and every surface between them is worked in twisted rope and grain patterns, as though the cross had been braided by hand rather than cast, with clustered beads finishing each terminal.
Coptic Christianity, rooted in Egypt since the first century, developed its own vocabulary of cross forms, and this braided, budded pattern is among the most recognizable of them.
