The Vintage Bronze Christ with the Cross Oval Center gives its whole field to the figure. Christ is shown half-length and bearded, a nimbus behind his head and one hand drawn in to his breast, while the upper limbs of a cross rise behind his right shoulder, close enough that the two forms overlap.
Setting the cross behind the living Christ rather than beneath a corpus is an old device in devotional metalwork, a way of holding the Lord and the instrument of his Passion in one image without picturing the Crucifixion itself.
