The Vintage Bronze Byzantine Rayed Crucifix, c. 1200 is small and carries real weight in the hand. At the crossing the metal opens into a scalloped rosette of radiating flutes, so that Christ stands against what reads as a burst of light, and the figure itself is drawn down to essentials: the arms laid straight along the bar, the body given in a few strokes, the head round and almost without feature.
That frank abstraction is the language of early Eastern Christian metalwork, where the aim was never portraiture but recognition, and the eye is sent to the light behind the figure rather than to the face. The original was made in the Byzantine world around 1200. There is no lettering anywhere on it, and the piece has the compact density of something meant to be carried through a life rather than hung on a wall.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
