This is the Christ of the earliest wearable crosses, seventh-century Byzantine work made to be worn beneath the clothing and never meant to be refined. Its force comes from the frontal gaze and the open hands, the gesture of blessing rather than of suffering, which is how the early Church preferred to show him. Everything is simplified and severe, and the cross is the more moving for it.
