The Vintage Bronze Austrian Crucifix is a study in restraint. The arms are squared and plain, the field within them dropped below a raised border so that the whole cross reads as a shallow panel, and a small stepped tablet sits at the head. Against that quiet ground the corpus is long, lean and strongly stylized, the arms held straight out along the crossbar and the feet crossed one over the other.
Nothing here is decorative for its own sake, and no lettering appears anywhere on the piece. The drawing of the figure, spare and slightly elongated, belongs to Central European work of the earlier twentieth century, and the antique original is Austrian. It is a good crucifix for anyone who prays better without ornament, and its plainness holds up against daily wear and daily handling.
