The arms and shaft of the Vintage Bronze Art Deco Stepped Crucifix are cut in stepped, chamfered planes that fan outward toward each terminal, with a stepped finial rising above the head. The effect is architectural rather than floral: light breaks along every ridge and carries the eye out from the center in four directions. Against that geometry the corpus is modelled in high relief and full naturalism, and the contrast is the whole design.
A rectangular tablet above the head is lettered INRI, abbreviating the Latin Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews,” the charge Pilate ordered fixed to the cross. The faceted, setback treatment places the antique original in the Art Deco years between the wars, when devotional casting took up the new vocabulary of planes and angles without losing any of its seriousness.
