The Vintage Bronze 19th-Century Celtic Knotwork Cross draws its ring as a lozenge rather than the familiar circle, the four bars incised with rows of chevrons so that the cross sits inside a diamond of light. Every panel holds a quatrefoil interlace knot, four across the arms and head and three more running down the shaft, and a domed boss at the crossing is worked with spirals.
The original is a nineteenth-century English or Irish piece from the long Celtic revival that returned the ringed high crosses of Ireland and Iona to jewellers' hands. Nothing here is lettered. The whole of the interest lies in the knotwork, a line without beginning or end that has always been read as a figure of eternity, and it is cut deep enough to hold shadow and to read clearly at arm's length.
The cross was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
