Each arm ends in a scrolled palmette worked in relief, a pierced foliate crest rises above the upright, and a leafy sprig springs from the shaft below the corpus, so the cross puts out growth along its whole length. A small rosette sits at the crossing, just behind the head of Christ, catching the light where the arms meet.
Palmettes are among the oldest ornaments in Western art, and setting them on a cross carries an old idea with them: the wood that was cut down and put to use is shown alive again, leafing out at every end.
