Vintage White Bronze Open Square Crucifix with Rays

The arms of this white bronze crucifix are pierced with long rectangular openings, each framed by a beaded border, so the cross is built of squares and bars rather than curves. Fine rays are cut into the ground behind the crossing and spread out around the corpus, a textured panel stands above the head, and the foot finishes in a small scrolled finial.
The result is geometric where most crucifixes are foliate, closer to architecture than to a garden, while the corpus itself is modeled softly, the head inclined, the body long and quiet. The rays behind him are the point of the design: light coming out of the cross rather than falling on it, which is how the Church has always read Good Friday. The pale white bronze holds the beading crisp and takes an old-silver tone in the recesses.
