Product Details

The Southwest cutout cross carries a second cross cut clean through the middle of the first, so that light passes through the heart of it. Each of the four arms is worked with hand stamps rather than modeled: a many-rayed rosette struck at the center, framed by rows of zigzag and scallop running along the edges.

This is the vocabulary of Southwestern silverwork, where ornament is punched into the metal one blow at a time, and the squared openwork belongs to the same tradition. Because the stamping was done by hand, the rosettes are not identical and the zigzag wanders a little from arm to arm. There is no lettering and no figure, which leaves the cross to say the whole of what it means: the sign a Christian is marked with at baptism and traced at prayer, worn plain against the skin. Its quiet, architectural strength is the reason crosses of this kind have been worn for generations.

The Southwest cutout cross was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the cross's vintage character.

  • Made in the USA
  • Artisan-cast from an antique original
  • Finished by hand, so every piece is subtly unique.
  • Buy the medal alone, or add an optional chain or cord necklace
  • Add a cord or chain to have it arrive assembled and ready to wear
  • Arrives in a deluxe velour jewelry box
