The Vintage Bronze Scrolled Palmette Crucifix is the largest and most richly ornamented crucifix in this line. Each arm ends in a scrolled palmette worked in relief, a pierced foliate crest rises above the upright, and a leafy sprig springs from the shaft below the corpus, so the cross seems to be putting out growth along its whole length. A small rosette sits at the crossing, just behind the head of Christ.
That flowering is an old idea and a hopeful one: the cross as the tree of life, dead wood that breaks into leaf. Nothing is lettered here, and nothing needs to be, since the ornament carries the meaning and the corpus at the center holds the eye. Because every piece is poured and finished by hand, the relief on the palmettes reads a little differently from one to the next.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
