The Sacred Heart and Our Lady cross is worked on both faces. One side carries a flaming heart set at the centre of a deep sunburst, its rays chased into the broadly flared arms in fine hatched lines. The other carries a small standing Virgin, haloed and with her hands lowered, applied beneath a pierced openwork crown and her own burst of rays.
Two of the most beloved devotions in the Church are held together in one piece of metal, and the design gives each of them a sun of its own. The hammered surfaces and applied elements belong to a Southwestern folk tradition, where crosses were built up piece by piece by village smiths rather than cast in a single plane, and where the making was itself an act of devotion. That handmade quality is what carries over here: nothing is machine-smooth, and the light breaks unevenly across the hatching exactly as it did on the old cross.
