Vintage Bronze Roma Crucifix with Sunburst and Palmettes

The four arms of the Vintage Bronze Roma Crucifix flare outward and end in fan-shaped palmettes cut with fine ribs, so that the whole cross opens outward like a flower. A sunburst spreads in the ground behind the crossing, and a row of raised beads runs down the lower shaft to the foot. The corpus is slender, the head inclined to the right, the modeling clean and unfussy.
Rayed grounds and palmette arms belong to a long Roman tradition of crucifix making, and the combination here is a confident one: light behind the cross, and the arms of the cross breaking into leaf. There is no lettering on the piece and none is needed, since the ornament carries it entirely. Poured, cleaned and antiqued by hand, each casting holds the finish a little differently in its recesses.
