The Vintage Bronze Notre-Dame de Liesse Cross is a star-shaped French cross carrying a full devotion on each face. The front holds the crucified Christ under an INRI title, a sun and a crescent moon above him, and the instruments of the Passion laid into the radiating arms among fleur-de-lis. The reverse gives its field to the Virgin, a small crowned figure in the stiff conical mantle of a dressed shrine statue.
The lettering across those arms reads LIE and SSE, naming Notre-Dame de Liesse, the Picardy shrine whose dark Virgin has drawn pilgrims since the Middle Ages. Liesse is an old French word for gladness, and the legend of the shrine has the Virgin bringing captive knights home from Egypt, which is why this cross can hold the Passion on one face and deliverance on the other.
The cross was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
