A quiet crucifix with a small three-lobed clover at the end of every arm, each leaf given a raised center so it reads clearly even at this size. The shaft between them is plain and gently domed, which throws all the attention onto the corpus.
The trefoil has been used on crosses for centuries as a figure of the Trinity, three lobes joined in one leaf, one nature in three persons, and it turns up on French and Italian rosary crucifixes of the last two centuries in exactly this modest form. There is nothing else on the cross to look at, and that is the point: the ornament makes a single statement at the four ends and then leaves the figure alone. Hand antiquing settles into the domed shaft and lifts the clovers, so the finish falls a little differently on every piece.
