The Vintage Bronze Little Angel Crucifix has no crossbar in the ordinary sense. In its place a pair of spread wings rises from a small winged head set just above the head of the corpus, the upper shaft and the foot break into leaf and palmette forms, and a second little face looks out from the terminal below the feet.
Winged heads of this kind belong to the old workshop language of folk devotional metal, where an angel was set at the crossing to attend the Crucifixion rather than to decorate it, the same angels the Gospels place at the tomb and that tradition gathers at every altar. Small as the cross is, it holds that whole idea in a very short compass, and the wings give it a silhouette quite unlike a plain cross.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
