Vintage Bronze Large Peruvian Crucifix

The largest crucifix in this group, and one of the handsomest. Its arms and shaft are engraved end to end with close herringbone banding that reads like plaited palm, the arms open into spreading fan-shaped leaves, a crested finial rises above the head of Christ, and the foot flares into a fluted spray. Against all that patterning the corpus is left slender and smooth, the head fallen to one side.
The antique original is an eighteenth-century Peruvian piece. Crosses of this size were made for household altars and for confraternity processions as much as for wearing, and the deep, even engraving is the work of a well-practiced workshop hand. That plaited banding is a signature of Andean devotional metalwork, where the palm of Holy Week and the weaving traditions of the highlands meet in a single object. At three and three quarter inches it has real weight and reads clearly at a distance.
