Lilies grow over the whole of the Vintage Bronze Garden Lily Crucifix. A full open bloom sits at each arm end and another above the head and below the feet, while stems and pointed leaves twine along the shaft behind the corpus, which is slender and lightly modelled with the head fallen to the right. Every edge is shaped by the plant rather than squared off.
The lily is the flower of purity and of the resurrection, carried by Gabriel at the Annunciation and heaped on altars at Easter, and setting it over the cross reads the Passion forward into the rising. This is a crucifix that keeps Good Friday and Easter morning in the same hand, and it has the softness of a garden about it. The antiquing gathers in the leaves and leaves the petals bright.
