The Fleur-de-Lis Crucifix flares out to four fleur-de-lis points, each arm strewn with small cast flowers so that the whole cross seems to be in bloom. The corpus is finely modelled for its size, and set on the crossbar directly behind the outstretched arms are three clear letters: IHS.
IHS is the oldest monogram of the Holy Name, taken from the first letters of the name Jesus written in Greek and read later in Latin as Iesus Hominum Salvator, Jesus, Saviour of men. Placed where the titulus usually goes, it changes what the cross says. Instead of repeating Pilate's charge against a condemned man, it names the one who hangs there and calls him Saviour. The fleur-de-lis around it carries its own old meaning of purity and of the three petals of the Trinity, and gives a small crucifix an unmistakably French elegance.
