The Vintage Bronze Ferns and Flowers Crucifix looks planted rather than merely decorated. Fern-like fronds run out along both arms behind the corpus, each of the four terminals opens into a quatrefoil filled with a flower head, and a burst of finer leafwork rises behind the figure's shoulders. The corpus itself is slim and smoothly modelled, and the polish on it stands out against the darkened foliage.
The flowering cross is an old idea and a hopeful one: the dead wood breaking into leaf, the instrument of execution turning into the tree of life. Most crosses only gesture at it with a trefoil or a single bud, while this one states it outright and covers itself in growth from end to end. Each casting is antiqued and polished by hand, so the leaves take the light differently from one piece to the next.
