Vintage Bronze Etched Flowering Crucifix, Philippine Design

Every surface of the Vintage Bronze Etched Flowering Crucifix is worked. The arms and shaft are chased with long leaf and petal forms and pierced through in places so that light passes behind the slender corpus, and the terminals flare into pointed lobes edged with fine stippling. Above the head, where a lettered titulus would usually sit, there is a small scrolled rosette instead.
The pierced, chased leafwork belongs to the devotional metalwork of the Philippines, where flowering ornament and openwork have long been used to dress the cross, and where the crucifix stands at the center of family devotion. The effect is closer to lace in metal than to a plain cast cross. There is no inscription to read and none is wanted; the ornament carries the whole statement on its own.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique Philippine original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
