Every arm ends in a rounded quatrefoil, and inside each one sits a small equal-armed cross, so that four lesser crosses stand guard around the great one. Behind the corpus a broad flowered rosette spreads across the crossing, and a fifth medallion finishes the foot of the shaft.
The effect is generous rather than austere. Christ is modelled with real tenderness, the head fallen to one side, while the ornament around him blooms outward, taking up the old idea of the cross as a tree come back into flower.
