Look along the arms of this crucifix and two small tools come into focus: a pair of pincers standing upright on one side, a hammer with its head raised on the other. They are the instruments of the Passion in their plainest form — the hammer that drove the nails in, the pincers that drew them out again when the body was taken down.
Setting them on the arms of the cross itself is an old and affecting device. It turns the crucifix into a meditation on the whole of Good Friday rather than a single held moment: the nailing and the deposition, the beginning and the end of those hours, carried on either side of Christ.
